Ancient Secrets of Yoga and Breast Cancer
Presented by: Annette Loudon
Annette Loudon has been teaching yoga for over 15 years. She has produced a ground-breaking DVD on “Yoga for Women after Treatment for Breast Cancer.” Annette is writing a book called “Yoga for Women having or who have had treatment for breast cancer”. She is a member of YTAA, IAYT and IYTA. She has graduate and post-grad qualifications in Education and Management, as well as being highly qualified in Yoga, Pilates, Massage and Fitness. Annette is a rising star who will be sharing her extensive knowledge of Yoga and Breast Cancer on Sunday 10 October 2010.
Here Is What YOU Will Learn About Yoga And Breast Cancer
You will learn about the nature of breast cancer (primary and secondary), the different ways it can affect a woman, as well as the various treatments and their effects. You will also learn which Yoga practices are suitable during treatment, illness and recovery and how to incorporate them. This is based on current research findings, Annette’s own experience and the experience of other teachers, and the women themselves - some of whom will address you during the seminar.
You will learn about the significant body of research that has been conducted in the area of yoga and breast cancer that shows the benefits of an integrated yoga practice for women with breast cancer. Some of these benefits include a decrease in the anxiety and depression that can occur at the time of diagnosis and treatment, a reduction in recovery time, and an improvement in what is called “personal and social well-being”. In fact, some hospitals in USA and India are now including yoga in their breast cancer treatment. In Australia, often, it will be the breast care nurse or medical practitioner who will advise a woman to commence a yoga class.
Breast Cancer currently affects one in eight Australian women. Although there are areas or clusters where the statistic is higher, the reasons for this high number are still unclear. They may include genetics, familial history, hormones and lifestyle factors. Indigenous women have a slightly lower percentage, which may be related to the severity of other illnesses in their population.
The workshop will include an optional, practical component that will include practices that can be done standing or sitting in a chair.
“Sue proposed that I join a yoga group that was held in our suburb. I was a bit skeptical as I had just finished my radiation treatment on the previous Friday. But, with some encouragement, she came by and collected me on the following Monday and I commenced my recovery program through yoga.
Annette helped me on this road to recovery; it was a great journey with her gently guiding us and individualising our yoga sessions. Even though you were in a class, I always felt I had an individual lesson as she made sure you didn’t hurt yourself.
In the beginning the breathing, meditation and relaxation helped me, along with the great sleep I had the night after my yoga class. Then I began to appreciate the light stretching in my chest and arms, getting my centre back and the slow improvement in my overall strength, as well as having time to really feel my own recovery….that was ten years ago, and I am happy to say I still do yoga and I am still well! On a larger scale yoga has helped me to change my life including many of my attitudes and to be more present to each moment.” Stephanie, age 50 at diagnosis.
